Why 'Grace + Truth'?

The story behind our church's heartbeat — and why we refuse to choose between the two.

S

When our pastors were praying about what to name this church, the Lord kept bringing them back to one verse: "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)

Notice what John doesn't say. He doesn't say Jesus was full of grace or truth — as if He had to pick. He says Jesus was full of grace AND truth. Both. Always. At the same time.

That's not a small thing. It's actually the whole gospel.

Grace without truth is sentimentality. It says "you're fine the way you are" to people who are not fine. It pats us on the head and leaves us exactly as we were — just with better self-esteem about our brokenness. That's not grace. That's avoidance.

Truth without grace is condemnation. It says "here's the standard, and you've failed" — and then walks away. It crushes people under a weight they cannot carry. That's not truth. That's cruelty.

In Jesus, grace and truth meet. He doesn't lower the standard (truth) — He meets it on our behalf (grace). He doesn't ignore our sin (truth) — He carries it to the cross (grace). And the result is something neither grace nor truth could produce alone: real transformation.

That's why our theme verse is John 1:17: "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." And that's why our tagline is "Grace + Truth = Transformation."

We want NCC to be a church where grace leads and truth follows. Where people are welcomed exactly as they are — and loved too much to be left there. Where the question is never "how do I measure up?" but "how is Jesus making me new?"

If that's the kind of church you've been looking for, come visit. There's a seat saved for you.
