Five Simple Prayers for the New Year

Prayers you can pray every day — short enough to remember, deep enough to change you.

As we step into a new year, here are five short prayers we're praying together as a church family. They're simple enough to memorise, deep enough to keep praying for a lifetime. Consider praying one each morning this week — and see what God does.

1. "

Father, give me eyes to see Your goodness today." (Psalm 145:7)

The Psalms invite us to "meditate on God's glorious splendour" and "overflow with the praise of His goodness." But we miss it — every day — because our eyes are on our phones, our problems, our plans. This prayer asks God to open our eyes. And He does. In a child's laugh. In a meal shared. In a verse that jumps off the page. In a kind word from a stranger. He is speaking. We're just not listening.

2. "

Lord, search me and know my heart today." (Psalm 139:23-24)

This is the bravest prayer you can pray. It invites God to shine His light into the corners we've kept dark — the resentment, the pride, the fear, the secret sin. He doesn't search to shame us. He searches to heal us. Confession is how we keep short accounts with God and keep our hearts soft.

3. "

Jesus, make me a blessing today." (Genesis 12:2)

God's promise to Abraham was "I will bless you... so that you will be a blessing." The blessing was never meant to stop with us. This prayer reorients our day outward: who can I encourage? Who can I serve? Who can I include? Who can I tell about Jesus?

4. "

Spirit, fill me afresh today." (Ephesians 5:18)

Paul commands us to "be filled with the Spirit" — a present-tense, ongoing reality. Not a one-time event. We leak. We need daily refilling. This prayer acknowledges our dependence and invites the Spirit to take the wheel again.

5. "

Father, Your kingdom come, Your will be done — in me, today." (Matthew 6:10)

The Lord's Prayer, personalised. Not my will, but Yours. Not my agenda, but Yours. Not my comfort, but Your glory. This is the prayer that loosens our grip on our own lives and lets God have His way.

Five prayers. Five minutes a day. May God use them to shape us more and more into the image of His Son in this new year.
